When you’re sitting in the dentist’s chair and he tells you that familiar credo, “you won’t feel a thing,” a lifetime of evil-doers wielding power tools flashes through your mind. In the case of Dr. John Badolato, however, you can believe him. “I try to break all the stereotypes,” says the 34-year-old dentist and co-owner of Scottsdale’s swanky nightclub Six. Again, more words that ring true as you wander through the peaceful – yes, peaceful – setting packed with more high-tech gadgetry and amenities than 007’s day spa. Each of the four exam rooms, for example, feature ceiling-mounted flat screen TVs and wireless headphones so you can bliss out to one of 300 DVDs. You’ll also find digital x-rays, decay-detecting lasers and cameras for before-and-after shots. Badolato, who is building a new home in DC Ranch, says, “The thing that drives me is the doctor/patient relationship, which is the coolest thing.” At the tender age of 9, before he adopted the “feel no pain” mantra, Badolato had his first dental patient. The scenario involved his sister, her loose tooth, a string and a doorknob. “The extraction wasn’t a success, but at least the attempt was there,” he says. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO., Badolato received his bachelor’s degree in biology and attended dental school at the University of Missouri where he envisioned which path he wanted to take in his field, cosmetic dentistry, a service he also provides for free to several nonprofit groups including those that help domestic violence victims. “You could change someone’s life by changing his or her smile,” he says. -Landon J. Something to Smile About
As a accident-prone child growing up in Missouri, Dr. John Badolato admits that he was always interested in healthcare. There was something about the patient/doctor relationship that inspired this frequent visitor to the ER to make a life out of helping others.

How Dr. B, as his patients call him, got into dentistry has two stories. His mother would say it all started when he pulled his sister’s first tooth. He, on the other hand, attributes a more recent inspiration. About five to 10 years ago, while studying under the man he considers his “pseudo mentor,” cosmetic dentist, Dr. Bill Dorfman (currently of Extreme Makeover fame), Dr. B says he was inspired by the way cosmetic dentistry changed people’s lives for the better.

With the growing popularity of all forms of cosmetic surgery in recent years, Dr. B recognizes that there are many options out there but stresses the importance of finding a quality doctor, especially for something as important as your smile. “It changes your life and how you’re perceived,” he emphasizes.

Dr. B refers to his own practice as “the Nordstrom of dentistry,” explaining that he and his team not only offer the best products for what’s out there and discounted services for uninsured patients, but they also offer time, insuring each person who walks through their door gets “awesome service.” Recently, Dr. B has joined with Chrysalis Shelter to donate smile makeovers to victims of domestic violence, adding to the other pro-bono work he has done throughout the years.

It’s not all work and no play for Dr. B, however. On his off days, which he admits have been rather scarce lately, he can be seen golfing at Desert Mountain with his father by day and relaxing at 6 (in which he has investments) or Jade Bar by night. –AF

Personal Service Helps People Smile

Dr. John Badolato, DDS, known as Dr. B to his friends and patients, was part of a pediatric heart surgery team and on track to attend medical school. That’s when, following the advice of several medical doctors, he tried dental school for a semester. The dental school was right next to the hospital where he worked, and he planned to transfer into medical school if it didn’t work out.

“I always thought, ’who are doctors who don’t get into medical school? – they’re dentists.’ I wasn’t even thinking about attending dental school,” says Badolato.

However, after being recommended to contact Dr. Bill Dorfman, a top aesthetic dental surgeon and the current surgeon on ABC’s Extreme Makeover, Badolato became enrolled in The Pacific Aesthetic Continuum (PAC) program, which Dr. Dorfman helped to start. Reflecting on the program, Badolato says, “The light at the end of the tunnel was shown to me for cosmetics, and I saw what was possible in that I could change people’s lives by changing their smile.”

Needless to say, Badolato never transferred to medical school and, after graduating from the University Of Missouri’s dental school, moved to Arizona and joined a dental practice. Two years later, he “took the bold leap,” as he puts it, and started his own practice in Scottsdale, opening Studio B’s doors January 6 this year.

“I moved to Arizona because I wanted to be in Scottsdale. My family had moved here from Missouri to retire, and this is sort of my focal point,” says Badolato. He explains that his current Shea Boulevard and Loop 101 location is ideal because it’s accessible to those in the Airpark and in south Scottsdale. However, he plans to move further north within the next four years to build his own office, with his eye on property at Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road.

When asked about his service, Badolato stresses his concern with customer care, saying he thinks Studio B is the Nordstrom’s of dentistry. “I have a great team, and we all work well together delivering five-star service to patients,” says Badolato. “We take the best care of our patients, just like we would our families.”

Even more unique is that Studio B provides aesthetic and family dentistry all under one roof. Badolato explains, “We do it all. We take care of everybody from their basic oral healthcare needs to the more contemporary and advance gum care and whitening, and we also do it all together in one place. We fuse the contemporary and the state of the art technique with genuine traditional care and concern.”

Services offered by Studio B include everything from routine care and cleanings to light-activated teeth whitening to complete smile makeovers. Smile makeovers involve anything that improves a person’s smile, including veneers, tooth implants, and Invisalign® braces. Veneers involve recreating the faces of teeth. They can change the tooth alignment, size, shape, and color, and only take three visits to complete. Badolato also provides tooth implants if a tooth is unsalvageable and Invisalign® braces to correct alignment and spacing. Invisalign® braces are invisible and removable, and eliminate the need for metal brackets.

Studio B provides the most up-to-date technologically advanced equipment around. Laser diagnostics detect tooth decay, rather than the traditional metal instruments that many dentists use to poke at teeth and gums. Badolato utilizes ultra-sonic cleanings to improve the effectiveness of cleaning sessions. He even has a soft-tissue laser that can reshape gums. Digital x-rays are taken advantage of because they expose patients to 90% less radiation than regular x-rays. They also allow Badolato to manipulate the x-rays on the computer to his professional advantage.

Badolato emphasizes that he respects his patients. He says, “I don’t put anything in anyone’s mouth that I wouldn’t put in my own.” He explains that he is conservative, saying, “I believe we are in the age of preserving everyone’s natural tooth structure. Undetectable restorations are possible without having to trim off 60% of the tooth just to put a crown on it, as many dentists do.”

Not only is Badolato conservative with prescribing, but he offers options to all of his patients in pricing and quality of services. He makes sure his patients understand the ups and downs of every product, along with its functionality and cost. Studio B also caters to insurance – call to find out if yours applies.

Studio B understands and provides for those afraid of dentists. Badolato says, “People hate going to the dentist. I hated going to my dentist.” He continues, “What I learned throughout school and practice is it doesn’t have to be painful and people don’t have to be nervous.” Badolato provides options to watch movies, listen to CD’s on headphones or use personal sedatives, like sleeping pills or nitrous oxide (otherwise known as “laughing gas”). He allows patients t o bring in their own CD’s and/or DVD’s, or to choose from his growing collection. His office is clean, contemporary and replete with top technology. Despite all the services that Studio B provides, Badolato says the most important thing to help people feel comfortable is to listen to them.

All of this is probably why he sees 30-50 new patients each month. Despite this growth, he is sincere about not stretching himself and his staff too thin. Appealing to the Jerry Maguire film’s theme of less clients and more personal service, Studio B focuses on treating each individual like family. Inspired by the film, Badolato says, “We don’t say we have patients for life, we have friends for life.” That is evident from the plethora of gifts appreciative patients drop off at his office, and also from the fact that people fly into Scottsdale from New Mexico, California, Kansas, Missouri, and Nevada to take advantage of Studio B’s services.

The reason for Badolato’s dedication to service and dentistry lies in its results. “I know it [dentistry] affects people’s lives, and it changes their lives.” He also says, in reference to aesthetic dentistry, “If they want it and it will make them happier, let’s do it.” Badolato truly enjoys helping people, and dentistry is his method of doing so.

Scottsdale – One a recent afternoon, 5-year-old Garrett Marquis clambered happily into the dentist’s chair at Dr. John Badolato’s office.

Badolato warmed a small, thermoplastic, U-shaped wafer in hot water, and Garrett dutifully bit down on it. In less than a minute, the mold of Garrett’s teeth was complete.

Someday, it could save Garrett’s life.

Badolato makes an impression of children’s teeth with Toothprints, a product developed by Kerr Corp. For parents searching for a child who has been lost or abducted, tooth prints are a reliable means of identification.

“It’s a quick and easy thing,” said Badolato, 33, who does not charge for the procedure. “I probably take about five tooth prints a week, and we just started offering them 30 days ago.”

The impression records individual tooth characteristics and the relationship between the upper and lower jaw. It also captures a DNA sample and a saliva scent.

Children don’t mind it because it’s quick and it doesn’t hurt.

It was no big deal, Garrett said.

Garrett’s mother, Nancy, said it never occurred to her to get an impression of her son’s teeth until Badolato told her about the procedure.

“I always thought about fingerprints, but I never knew about dental impressions until a few weeks ago,” the Scottsdale resident said. “It’s something you don’t really thing about until you need to.”

Children should have new prints taken every year until they get all their adult teeth, Badolato said. The prints, which are sealed in a plastic bag, go home with the parents. A pediatric dentist in Boston created a quick, low-cost method for creating tooth prints about 15 years ago, said Mike Etheridge, vice president of marketing for California-based Kerr Corp.

Kerr developed the product and began marketing it to dental professionals in July 2003. “Today, there are probably 5,000 dentists across the country using Toothprints,” Etheridge said.

Despite interest from retailers, the product is not available to the public, Etheridge added. Kerr sells only to dental professionals.

Badolato said Toothprints is a great complement to the Amber Alert program, an emergency response system used by police to notify the public of kidnapped children through radio, TV and the Internet.

Tooth Truth: Right toothpaste puts a shine on the right dental need.
Ideally your dentist should be writing a prescription for your mouth. Though buying whichever toothpaste is on sale can be sufficient, people’s dental needs are different, and your toothpaste should address that, says Scottsdale dentist John Badolato.

“Unfortunately, there’s no one toothpaste for everybody. I wish there were,” says Badolato, of Studio B Aesthetic Family Dentistry. “Some people don’t respond as well to something that another would.”

Many people are concerned about cavities, and any fluoride-containing toothpaste is good for that, he says.

“Brushing not only breaks up the debris, but the fluoride actually strengthens the outer enamel, which makes the tooth resistant to decay. It can stop the decaying process,” he says.

He recommends Colgate Total as a good cavity-fighting toothpaste, not only because it has fluoride, but also because it contains and antibacterial agent.

“Among animal species, for how many bacteria species we have in our mouths, we’re second only to camels,” Badolato says. “Our mouths are dirty.”

The bacteria multiply and cause inflammation, which can lead to gum disease as well as bad breath – both big concerns among his patients.

The tongue is a magnet for bacteria.

“Your tongue is basically like a carpet. If you only brush your teeth and not your tongue, that carpet gets so dirty you can smell it,” he says.

Coffee doesn’t help.

“Coffee contains components that deposit on the tongue and stain the bacteria and make it odiferous.”

To fight bad breath, Badolato encourages patients to use CloSYSII, a toothpaste that contains chlorine dioxide to kill stinky bacteria. The paste also helps people with tooth sensitivity. But the compounds in it react badly with fluoride, so it doesn’t contain any, and people who use it must get fluoride treatments at the dentist’s.

Sensitivity is a common side effect of tooth whitening. The prescription-only Fluoridex toothpaste is not only formulated for sensitive teeth, it also has a lot of fluoride to protect the tooth enamel.

In some cases, users are sensitive to the toothpaste.

“Some people have sensitivity to fluoride or to an additive called sodium lauryl sulfate, which is a foaming agent. It gives you the idea your toothpaste is working, but in some people it can cause canker sores,” Badolato says.

He recommends CloSYSII for that, too, because it does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate.

There are also toothpastes for teeth that are spotted because a person has had too much fluoride or too little calcium when they were young. MI Paste “can reverse that, although it’s not a cure-all,” Badolato says. MI Paste is available through dentists.

Whitening toothpastes can brighten teeth, but not to the same degree as professional whitening.

“Studies show that baking soda and peroxide used together have whitening properties,” he says.

That combination helps remove stains, especially in those who smoke or drink a lot of tea or coffee.

“Basically, if you want to remove the stain, your going to whiten the teeth.”

Why it’s good: It’s one of the few fluoride toothpastes that contain triclosan, and antibacterial that fights gum disease.
You should know: Most grocery store toothpastes contain fluoride, but few contain antibacterial agents.

Issue: Bad breath, sensitivity to sodium lauryl sulfate
Toothpaste: CloSYSII
Why it’s good: It contains chlorine disulfide phosphate, which breaks up odor-causing bacteria. It’s a low abrasive and doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate, a foaming agent that can cause canker sores.
You should know: CloSYSII does not contain fluoride.

Issue: Sensitive teeth
Toothpaste: Fluoridex
Why it’s good: Whitening can make teeth very sensitive, and Fluoridex contains a high amount of fluoride, which eases sensitivity.
You should know: Fluoridex is available by prescription.

Why it’s good: It can remove some of the spotting on the teeth.
