More than “just a cleaning”
Periodontal disease affects one out of every five adults and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Research has shown that periodontal disease can affect your entire system and is linked to other very serious diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, pre-term birth and many others. For a long time it was thought that bacteria was the factor that linked periodontal disease to other disease in the body; however, more recent research demonstrates that inflammation may also contribute to the association. Therefore, treating bacteria and inflammation may not only help manage periodontal diseases but may also help with the management of other chronic inflammatory conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
A comprehensive examination, periodontal evaluation and x-rays can help us determine whether or not you have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease typically begins with common symptoms such as red, puffy or bleeding gums or gums that are receding away from your teeth. Gingivitis is the beginning stage of periodontal disease and should not be ignored. If left untreated, the disease will progress and could require periodontal scaling and root planning or even surgery to remove the bacteria and reduce the inflammation in your mouth.
At Studio B Smiles, we believe there is a better way! We believe that early intervention is the key to preserving not only your oral health but your general health as well. This is why we have implemented a system called Modular Periodontal Therapy into our hygiene protocol. This therapy is a non-surgical method of gum disease treatment that achieves results without the pain and discomfort of traditional treatments. Using a scientifically validated system of testing, medications and convenient home care, Modular Periodontal Therapy helps the mouth and body return to health in a pain-free, non-invasive manner, making it a great alternative to typical oral surgery.
In order to make sure we keep our patients as healthy as possible, our hygienists will do a thorough periodontal evaluation every time you see them. They will keep you apprised of the health of your gums and will alert you if they see any signs or symptoms of periodontal disease.
